Mediatek Launches AI Enabled Helio A Soc for Budget Smartphones

Chip makers MediaTek has unveiled a new Helio A SoC family with Artificial Intelligence capabilities for low-end to mid-range smartphones, and the first product of the series has already been adopted by Xiaomi.
MediaTek indicated that following the success of its Helio P series SoCs, the company decided to launch the new Helio A series to bring in “an even greater number of consumers access to high performance devices without a premium price tag.” The Helio A22 chip pairs four ARM Cortex-A53’s operating up to a clock speed of 2.0GHz with an IMG PowerVR GE-class GPU, and either high-speed LPDDR4x Random Access Memory or cost-efficient LPDDR3.
“Also coming with advanced camera features, and AI and power efficiency enhancements, the Helio A series is optimized for devices that offer a great value without sacrificing modern capabilities and features” – MediaTek said.
The Helio A22 was built using the 12nm FinFET fabrication technology and also MediaTek CorePilot technology at the heart of the SoC providing a power aware scheduling, thermal management and also UX monitoring to assign the right workload to CPU cores at a specific frequency and voltage. The Helio A22 also has AI features to take advantage of the MediaTek NeuroPilot software development kit (SDK) extensions and third-party AI applications.
In addition, MediaTek’s Helio A22 also supports up to 13+8 megapixels dual-camera setups at 30 frames per second (FPS) and a single camera operating mode of up to 21-megapixels. Device makers can also create large-screen devices with the Helio A22’s 20:9 HD+ display support.
The chipset family also supports the latest AI frameworks, which includes Google #Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI), so developers can seamlessly build AI applications for the Helio A22-powered devices.
The Helio A series is in volume production now with the availability of the Helio A22-powered Xiaomi Redmi 6A in China, according to MediaTek.
